From 17-30 May 2011, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Commerce, the "2011 Seminar on Anti-Malaria for Asian and African countries" was organized by Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. in Shanghai Customs College, Shanghai city, the People's Republic of China.
Participants to the Seminar included the experts of MMV (Medicines for Malaria Venture), Dr. Tshefu Antoinette from Kinshasa School of Public Health, University of Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Dr. Ilse Christina Hendriksents and Dr. Yoel Lubell from Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University (Kindom of the Netherlands), Prof. Dr. Xu Mingqi - Vice Director of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Dr. Cao Jun -Assistant Director, Chief of Malaria Department, Jiangsu Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Prof. Huang Fang from Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevetion, National Institute of Parasitic Disease, the leadership of Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd in Shanghai and Guilin City (China), representatives of Ministry of Commerce of P.R.China, of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, and 37 representatives of 16 Asian and African countries such as Viet Nam (2), Nepal (3), Pakistan (2), Cambodia (3), Phillipines (2), Indonesia (5), Myanmar (3), Timor -Leste (2), Ghana (2), Nigeria (3), Uganda (1), Liberia (2), Ethiopia (1), Sudan (1), Sierra Leone (3), Kenya (2). They are mostly the managers of the national malaria control programmes, parasitologists, experts in the field of tropical diseases, clinical pharmacists and bachelors of biology, etc. whose work directly involve the national anti-malaria programmes.

The objectives of the Seminar are to learn and understand the own experience of China in malaria prevention, to introduce the China's pharmaceutical industry in general and anti-malarial drugs in particular over the years, as well as to identify and share with country participants progress made, key challenges, lesson learned, and solutions for controlling malaria.

During the two-week training course, the participants listened to lectures on topics such as Artesunate vs. quinine in the treatment of severe falciparum malaria in African children - AQUAMAT, Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of parenteral artesunate for children with severe malaria in Africa, Malaria case surveillance and management in China: Internet information reporting system and national surveillance sentinels, The improvement of Anti-malaria diagnosis technology: Light microscopy, Immunochromatographic test (RDTs), Nucleic acid tests (PCR, LAMP), The research of drug-resistance in the treatment of malaria, The update research conclusion of Anti-malarial vaccine, Management and evaluation of GFATM Projects, Management and Quality Control of Microscopic Examination, The practice and experience against malaria in China, Introduction of China's economic situation and the result of the reform and opening policy, WHO Malaria Treatment Guidelines and the Procedure of WHO Pre-Qualification, etc.

Besides, after the Seminar, participants were also arranged to visit the plant of Guilin Pharma. This is one of Fosun Pharmaceutical's affiliates and has been the only company pre-qualified by WHO as the first one in China.
