From 27-29 May, 2010, at Caesar Hotel, Hochiminh City, the Preventive Medicine Department (MoH) in coordination with the World Health Organization held the Workshop on evaluating the sensitivity of dengue mosquitoes to insecticides and recommending the use of insecticides in dengue fever control.
The workshop was presided by Prof. Vu Sinh Nam - Deputy Director of the Preventive Medicine Department with the attendance of leaderships of preventive medicine institutes and specialists in the field of vector control from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, the Pasteur Institute Nha Trang, the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Tay Nguyen, the Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, the National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology, the Institutes of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology of Quy Nhon and Ho Chi Minh City and Dr. Tran Cong Dai, representive of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam.
At present, space spraying is still the most effective measure to contain dengue fever/dengue hemorrhagic fever (DF/DHF) outbreaks. However, the resistance of the Ae. Aegypti mosquito to most of insecticides were reported throughout the world. According to WHO (2006), more than 500 vectors are resistant to insecticides, of which over 50% transmitting malaria, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, filariasis... The evaluation of the sensitivity of the Aedes aegypti mosquito to insecticides in Vietnam and the build of epidemiological map of insecticide resistance of Aedes aegypti would contribute to set up the strategy of using insecticides in DF/DHF control programme in Vietnam.

The workshop evaluated the activities of research and supervision of insecticide resistance of Aedes aegypti and the efficacy of insecticides in recent years nationwide; since then exchanging measures and unifying technical processes to improve the efficiency of vector control measures, propose solutions, chemicals, mosquito-repellent preparations in Vietnam.
At the workshop, Dr. Tran Cong Dai has reported on the situation of dengue fever and of theAe.aegypti mosquitoresistant to chemicals in the world currently; the specialist of the Preventive Medicine Department on behalf of the Steering Committee of the National DF/DHF Control presented activities of the national DF/DHF control programme in Vietnam and gave the overview of the use of insecticides in controlling dengue fever.
The experts in vector control from institutes and preventive medicine centres of severely-hit provinces/cities have reported the use of insecticides and results of researching and monitoring the sensitivity of the dengue mosquitoes to chemicals in localities.
On the basis of the scientific reports presented at the workshop, organizers have gathered contributing opinions and reached the consensus on building the processes such as directions for dengue outbreak containment, test on the sensitivity of the Ae.Aegypti mosquito to insecticides and experiment in biological effects of ULV spraying in dengue fever control in Vietnam.
