Pneumonia (the virus A/H5N1)
There was one new case reported in Thanh Hoa province, and one died of the disease. The cumulative number of infected cases/deaths from December, 2003 to now was 111/56.
Acute diarrhoea
There were 701 cases of acute diarrhoea, 1 death including 56 Vibrio cholerae-positive cases in 13 provinces: Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Hoa Binh, Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc. The cumulative number of infected cases/deaths at the beginning of the year was 701/1.
Typhoid (A01)
15 provinces reported 80/0 of infected cases/deaths. The cumulative total of infected cases/death at the beginning of the year was 262/0, 10% lower compared with the infected cases of 2008 (292/0).
Encephalitis, viral (A83-A89)
There were 11/0 of infected cases/deaths reported in 7 provinces. The cumulative total in the early year are 84/1 of infected cased/death. Compared with 2008 (141/2), the number of infected cases reduced by 40.4% and death 1 case.
Dengue (A90)
35 provinces are reported 4.920/6 of infected cases/death. Cumulative total of infected/death in the early year to now are 16,635/14. Compared with 2008 (11,447/9), this number increases 45,3% of infected cases and 5 deaths.
Hepatitis (B15-B19)
23 provinces reported of 414/0 infected cases/death. The cumulative number from thein the year beginning was 1,785/0 of infected cases/death. Compared with the same time of 2008, the infected cases reduced by 7%, and deaths reduced by 5 cases.

Meningitis (A39.0)
There were 3 provinces reporting 30/0 infected cases/death. The cumulative total at the beginning of the year 97/0 of infected cases/death. In comparison with last year period (305/0), the infected cases reduced by 68%.
Bubonic plague
There were no new infected cases reported.
Malaria
There were reportedly 3,414/0 cases/death in 55 provinces. The cumulative number from the year beginning were 15,962/1 cases/death. Compared with 2008 (21,136/2), the infected cases decreased by 24,5% and death by 1 case.
Preventive medicine activities
The Ministry of Health (MoH) took on direct instructions and guidelines for control activities of influenza A (H1N1), A (H5N1), acute diarrhea and dengue fever so as to prevent outbreaks from occurring. The MoH also directed The Center for Preventive Medicine of Thanh Hoa province to inspect, monitor and deal with the outbreak of Influenza A (H5N1). For the acute diarrhoea outbreak in Ha Noi and northern provinces, the MoH directed the related units and coordinated with provincial people's committees in outbreak-stricken provinces to give solutions and prevent the spread of the epidemic.

In order to face the complication of the influenza A (H1N1) outbreak happening around the world, the MoH has deployed active and urgent measures to prevent the further spread of the viral transmission, such as providing directions for Health services and Preventive medical centres in all cities and provinces nationwide to strengthen moniroting measures, especiallly at the international border gates. At the same time, the MoH ordered all localities to detect suspected cases promptly upon their arriving from epidemic areas. Besides the readiness for influenza A (H1N1) outbreak control measures such as available medicine and other supplies and equipment, the MoH also produced messages and guidelines on outbreak control.
HIV/AIDS Control Activities
HIV/AIDS infection
Until May 16, 2009, there have been 144,631 of HIV infected cases, including 31,356 AIDS cases and 42,558 deaths.

- Compared with April, 2009: HIV infected cases reduced by 3,333 people, AIDS patients reduced 487 people, deaths reduced 234 people.
- Compared with May, 2009: HIV infected cases reduced 1,802 people, AIDS patients increased 173 people, deaths reduce 273 people.
HIV/AIDS control activities
The new project of improving the capability of HIV/AIDS control centres has been prepared. MoH's senior officials also accompanied Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong in his trip to France and the Netherlands to study and work out the policies and experiences on preventing drugs and prostitution. Within the country, various activities were carried out, such as the coordination with the FEPFAR on provision of condoms for Vietnam; with the Methadone project in Hai phong and visit to HIV infected children at children camp on the occasion of the Children International Day.
Food safety and hygiene
According to the Vietnam Food Safety and Hygiene Department, there have been 6 incidents of food poisoning in 4 provinces (Ha Giang, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Binh Thuan), with 114 victims, 68 being hospitalized and 2 resulted in deaths. one of the incident was caused by mushroom toxin, yet the others were not known. Nationwide, there have cumulatively been 28 incidents of food poisoning with 1853 victims and 12 deaths.
