In January 2010, Vietnam Global Fund Malaria Control Project Round 7 (2009-2013) conducted the survey on malaria indexes which are in the operation targets of the project 2010 in the sites represented the country' malaria-endemic areas.
The survey was conducted at 5,400 households of 360 hamlets, 180 communes in 30 selected districts from 156 malaria endemic districts of the project; the National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE) directed and deployed in 12 provinces, 12 districts and 72 communes of the North; the IMPE-Quy Nhon directed and deployed in 12 provinces, 12 districts and 72 communes of the Central Vietnam and the IMPE - Ho Chi Minh directed and deployed in 5 provinces, 6 districts and 36 communes. Therefore, there were about 30 surveillance missions including the staff of Institutes, provinces, districts, communes and hamlets.
The objects of the survey were heads or representatives of households who were surveyed by the method of interview on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP survey) of the people. The interviews were conducted for the people with the ages of from 18 to 60, who can understand and answer the questions.
Vietnam Global Fund Malaria Control Project Round 7 (2009-2013) has been conducted for two years and has achieved the results to support Vietnam Malaria Control Programme with the aim of decreasing malaria morbidity, mortality and no outbreaks occurring. However, the programme has confronted with many difficulties and challenges, for example mobilised people going to malaria endemic areas or working in the forest, sleeping in the field huts don't often take any protective measures for themselves. Besides, the people live in the remote areas with low economic conditions and education levels, difficult traffic, making it difficult for them to approach health services; therefore, risk of malaria return is very high. The survey of malaria indexes is very necessary because it can evaluate the rate of malaria morbidity, parasites, mortality as well as the malaria epidemic at surveyed areas exactly; in addition, it can set up basic malaria indexes for effective surveillance activities of the project in 2010 and the following years.
