According to the statistics of the first 6 months of 2010, dengue fever tended to increase and can outbreak in provinces/cities of Central Vietnam.
According to the statistics in provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Thua Thien-Hue, Gia Lai, etc., dengue fever situation was at risk of outbreaks with thousands of morbidity cases and some of deaths. In Phu Yen province, morbidity cases were mainly in Tuy Hoa city with 335 cases reported, included one death; Song Cau district 148 cases, Dong Hoa 41 cases and risk of spreading the epidemic on the large scale. In June 2010, Binh Dinh province had 163 dengue fever morbidity, increasing 2.6 times against last month, including dengue fever (DF) 128 cases (78.5%), dengue haemorrhagic fever(DHF) 35 cases (21.5%); morbidity rates of children under 15 years old made up 32.5%. In the middle of June 2010, dengue fever situation tended to increase drastically in Quy Nhon city,districts of Tuy Phuoc, An Nhon, Phu Cat and risk of outbreaks in the whole province. The epidemic outbreak is mainly due to the unpredictable weather, epidemic season and ineffective vector control measures.

Because the dengue fever situation was complicated and at risk of spreading on a large scale, the provincial centres for preventive medicine of Phu Yen sent the document to the Provincial People’s Committee to announce the epidemic. The province also proposed the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute to support chemical for carrying out dengue fever control measures at localities. Besides, the provincial centres for preventive medicine of Phu Yen and Binh Dinh directly set up the plans of dengue fever control such as launching the campaigns of exterminating mosquito larve, spraying insecticides and strengthen health communication and education for dengue fever control.
To support the provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen, the IMPE-Quy Nhon has coordinated with the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang to supervise the disease situation and assist the provinces to halt its spread. However, the effective prevention of dengue fever epidemic also need the great efforts of health services, the expenditure support for localities and awareness of the people. Besides, the people actively exterminate mosquito lavae around their dwelling, carry out insecticide spraying, cover water jars tightly and apply all-in-all larvicidal measures.

In recent years, the dengue fever situation happened complicatedly, which coincided with the prediction of Ministry of Health and the research institutes. Although the plan and fund of dengue fever control measures were set up and carried out actively, dengue fever still continue to increase and cause serious consequences. Moreover, the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang, the Institue of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Tay Nguyen and the IMPE-Quy Nhon need to coordinate together closely to prevent the outbreaks from occuring.
